Fabric of your choice
Matching Thread
Clips or Pins
Ruffle pillows are making a big splash in the home and fashion market right now. With the love of cottages and feminine aesthetic style in high demand the ruffle is being used more and more in decor. If you are a visual learner here is a video of me making this pillow case and two others!
To start you can use a pillow case you already have or measure your pillow insert. For the maximum fullness out of your insert make your case a size down. For example a 22x22 pillow insert should have a 20x20 pillow case. You can also make your case the exact same size as your insert for a less full look.
Ruffle Boarder
The ruffle can be as big or small as you want. The longer your strip of fabric the more ruffles you will get. Creating a more maximalist look to your pillow. For my fabric strips I cut double the length of each side 3 inches wide. If your fabric isn’t long enough in one strip you can attach multiple together. Just try to keep that seam on the bottom of your pillow for a cleaner looking finished pillowcase. Fold your strip in half making your ruffle an inch an half. I chose to have a reversible pillowcase with one side matching the ruffle and the other side a warm green to contrast the ruffle.
Basting Stitch
To create the ruffle you will need to make what is called a basting stitch. This is an open stitch that allows you to pull on the thread to ruffle the fabric. Take your time pulling the thread. I had to pull harder then i expected but making sure not to pull so hard it broke the thread. As you pull you move the ruffle down the fabric making room for you to pull more.
You’ll need more clips then you think to attach the ruffle to the front pillow because of how much bunching the fabric has. As you sew you will have to hold down the ruffles in place.
Finish Pillowcase and Closer Options
For this pillowcase I chose to do a tie closer but you can definitely do a zipper or envelope fold instead. The make the three tie closers I used scrap of my pillow fabric. Sewing inside out and then clipping a pin to one in to pull the tie right side out. Sew the ties on the front and back seam allowances to connect. Now you have a cute ruffle pillow to add to your couch or bed.
